There are currently about 150 million pets living with American families. All told, roughly 38% of the nearly 105 million households in this country have dogs, and roughly 32% of that same number have cats. That means when US firefighters answered the nearly 1.5 million fire calls last year, 440,000 of which were house fires, they stood a fairly strong chance of encountering an injured house pet. It is the central goal of the Chico Project of Greater Washington to provide rescue crews with the animal-specific, life-saving equipment necessary to provide Fido and Fluffy with the same, basic-level life support they provide for human family members. |
